The Rt Hon The Lord Saville of Newdigate

Lord Saville of Newdigate was born in 1936. Mark Saville was educated at Rye Grammar School and Brasenose College, Oxford. He read law at University and obtained first class degrees (BA and BCL). He was awarded the Vinerian Scholarship in 1960.

Lord Saville was called to the Bar (Middle Temple) in 1962. He became a Queen's Counsel in 1975 and a Bencher of his Inn in 1983. He was appointed a Judge of the High Court in 1985 and a Lord Justice of Appeal in 1994. In 1997 he was appointed a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary.

Between 1994 and 1996 he chaired a Committee of the Department of Trade and Industry concerned with arbitration legislation. This produced an Arbitration Bill, which has now been enacted as the Arbitration Act 1996.

On 29 January 1998 he was appointed to chair the Inquiry into the events of 30 January 1972 in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

In 2009 he was appointed as one of the first Judges of the Supreme Court in England & Wales.

Simon Clarke

Simon Clarke been practising as a materials expert for over 20 years and have been a Member of the Academy since 1995. I consider that the Academy provides an essential forum supporting experts from all backgrounds and representing their interests.

He is a Partner in a specialist materials consultancy working on a wide variety of projects ranging from new-build to historic structures, many of which are listed. This work includes review of documents and specifications and provision of materials advice for new and historic structures and materials. His work as an expert ranges from relatively minor incidents such as personal injuries, due to failed broom handles or accidents with power tools, through to more major incidents, such as fatalities involving cars and machinery, including fairground rides, cranes and lift failures. His criminal involvements have included investigation of corrosion on weapons involved in various murder cases, examination of counterfeit £1 coins, as well as commenting upon the machines and tooling involved in the reactivation of a number of submachine guns.

Ben Johnson

Ben Johnson is a Managing Director in the Global Investigations and Strategic Intelligence practice of Berkeley Research Group LLC. Responsible for leading forensic accounting assignments on behalf of a range of clients, including regulators, law firms and corporates. 

He has over 17 years experience in the field of forensic accounting and litigation, including financial and regulatory investigations, and commercial disputes and litigation.

Paul England

Paul is a senior associate and professional support lawyer at Taylor Wessing who specializes in life sciences patent litigation, including related issues of SPC and regulatory protection. 

Although not an expert hiumself Paul works with them daily in his work as a solicitor and is the author of 'Expert Privilege' in Civil Evidence (Hart Publishing).

Sue Bayram
Immediate Past Chairman

Sue Bayram is an experienced Expert Witness in the field of nursing and healthcare and also an experienced Civil and Commercial Mediator.  She has been a member of the Academy since 2001. As a member she has served several terms on both the Council and the Executive as well as other Academy roles. 

Her business is that of an Independent Nurse and Management Consultant. As part of her consultancy work she undertakes Interim and Crisis Management roles (usually but not exclusively) in nursing and healthcare and delivers training and support nationally on related topics. Sue is able to mediate on a range of disputes and also offers workplace mediation as part of her consultancy role.

She is passionate about raising the profile of mediation and enjoys getting actively involved in relevant projects and activities.

Michael Cohen
Chairman Emeritus 

Michael Cohen is deeply involved in the world of dispute resolution. He is a Chartered Arbitrator, a qualified mediator and a practising insurance expert. 

Formerly the Chairman of The Academy of Experts he was responsible for the professional standards and training of experts and dispute resolvers around the world. 

He is a regular course tutor as well as being an established contributor to professional journals and a frequent conference speaker.
