The Course Tutors


All of the courses are conducted under the supervision of a team of experienced Academy tutors. In addition to their other roles all three practice as Experts. Their disciplines are very different and this is one of the strengths of this successful team. In addition to the team of tutors, others are being invited to participate, for example a member of the judiciary to speak on 'What the Judge wants from an Expert Witness'.

Michael Cohen

Insurance Expert

Michael Cohen is deeply involved in the world of dispute resolution. He is a Chartered Arbitrator, a qualified Mediator and a practising insurance expert. As Chairman of The Academy of Experts he was responsible for the professional standards and training of experts and dispute resolvers around the world. 

He is a regular course tutor as well as being an established contributor to professional journals and a frequent conference speaker. He devised the mediator training now operating in the UK.


Anthony Canham

Civil Engineer 

Tony Canham is a consulting civil and structural engineer who specialises in dispute resolution. 

He is a registered arbitrator and mediator and appears as an expert witness in the High Court of England. 

He is a Past Vice President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a member of the Joint Consultative Committee of the London Court of International Arbitration and Immediate Past Chairman of The Academy's Education and Training Committee.


Guy Cottam

Civil Engineer

Guy Cottam was a director of an international civil engineering contractor. He now specialises in contractual matters and Dispute Resolution.

He has an in depth knowledge and understanding of ADR and in particular mediation having been heavily involved in the original preparation of the Academy's mediation training courses.

He is an active member of the Institution of Civil Engineers having served on council, been chairman of the Arbitration and the Conciliation and Adjudication Advisory Panels, and is currently chairmen of the Advisory Panel on Legal Affairs, and SCOPCOL the committee which sets the examination in law and contract procedure. 

He was responsible for creating the ICE Training Courses for Adjudicators and Conciliators. He is a regular Course Tutor and Trainer for the Academy of Experts the ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers), CIArb (Chartered Institute of Arbitrators), CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building), and TeCSA (Technology and Construction Court Solicitor's Association). 

He has extensive experience as a mediator mainly in construction and engineering disputes. The size, location and nature of these mediations is varied. They include bridges, harbours, power stations and roadworks and have values that go into millions. 

He is a past Secretary and Deputy Chairman of The Academy of Experts. He is legal correspondent for Construction News.


Stephen  Hannaford

Fire Investigation

Steve Hannaford served in the London Fire Brigade for 15 years. He went into private practice in 1988, firstly setting up the European division of an American forensic investigation company. Since 1990 he has been an independent fire forensic consultant. Mr Hannaford is an experienced expert witness. He also lectures to loss adjusters and insurance companies on domestic/commercial fire investigation techniques.

 


Philip Newman

Barrister

Philip Newman has practised law for over 20 years both as a solicitor and as a barrister. He was Secretary to the Goulding Working Party on Fraud and Irregularity and the duties of Auditors. He provides advice, drafting and advocacy in a wide range of business related litigation, including contract claims, trade mark and copyright infringement, IT disputes, breach of confidence, corporate and partnership disputes, fraud and irregularity, professional negligence and insolvency. 

He is heavily involved in acting on disciplinary and regulatory matters. He sits as an arbitrator and is a mediator accredited by The Academy of Experts, of which he is a member of Council. He is Secretary to The Academy’s CPR Working Party and is co-authoring (with Dominic Spenser Underhiill of Rowe & Maw) a practitioner’s text on the law of expert evidence.


Augustus Ullstein QC

Queen's Counsel

Augustus Ullstein was called to the Bar in 1970 and became a Queen's Counsel in 1992. He is also a member of the Bar in Gibraltar. He is Chairman of the Fellows Vetting Committee of The Academy of Experts and has a reputation for incisive cross-examination. His principal area of practice is professional negligence for all professions, both for Plaintiffs and Defendants.
