Faculty of Mediation & ADR

The Faculty of Mediation and ADR was founded by The Academy of Experts in furtherance of one of its principal objectives, the pursuit of Cost Efficient Dispute Resolution. The Faculty furthers the Academy’s work on the promotion of all forms of ADR for the benefit of society.

The Rt Hon Sir Brian Neill was installed as the Faculty’s first Principal by The Rt Hon The Lord Howe of Aberavon CH QC at The Academy’s tenth anniversary celebrations at the Royal Courts of Justice. Sir Brian retired as a Lord Justice of Appeal in September 1996, was then appointed a Judge of the Court of Appeal for Gibraltar in 1997 and has subsequently become a Vice-President of The Academy. On 30th January 2004 Sir Brian was succeeded as Principal by the Hon Mr Justice Colman.

The day to day work of the Faculty is overseen by its Dean, Mark Roe of Masons Solicitors.

The Faculty is responsible for administering the Academy’s involvement in the various court mediation schemes such as Central London, Birmingham, Guildford and Exeter.

The Faculty’s principal aims are:

  • To promote all forms of alternative dispute resolution and facilitate their wider use.
  • To provide a forum for the dissemination of information relating to ADR and to promote research and further studies in the field.
  • To provide further education and training as well as accreditation for dispute revolvers
  • The Faculty provides training both in the UK and abroad for those wishing to become qualified as Mediators in the Commercial sector. It co-operates both with the judiciary and other organisations.
  • On 30th January 2005 the second edition of its simple guide to Mediation, “Resolving your Dispute by Mediation” as well as a Register of Qualified Dispute Resolvers.

Talks:

The Faculty has hosted a number of talks by eminent members of the Legal Profession. The most important of these have been the keynote lectures given by the then Lord Chancellor, Lord Irvine of Lairg in 1999 and Professor Martin Partington in 2003.

The full text of these talks is available below.
